FAQ

  • How do I measure my hat size?
To determine your hat size we suggest you measure your head circumference in inches over the forehead. Then simply pick the hat size you need based on your measurements.
  • How many pelts does it take to make a hat?
For a typical trapper hat it will take 1 large coyote, 2-3 raccoon, 2 fox, or 1 x-large beaver. We highly recommend you contact us first so we can assist you with the correct number of pelts to ship.
  • How long does it take to get a custom hat or pair of mittens made?
Turn around time is largely dependant on time of year but we strive to finish your order within 90 days. During trapping season or the holiday rush it could take longer. We would rather have you pleasantly surprised if it shows up early then make promises we can't keep.
  • What if I don't have fur of my own can you still make me a hat or mittens?
Absolutely! We stock a large variety of tanned furs. Let us know what you want and if we don't have it we can probably get it.
  • Do the flaps on your hats fasten up out of the way if I don't want them around my ears?
Yes! We use snaps instead of leather ties for ease of use. Our snaps keep the hat secure under your chin when you need it or up on top when your don't.
  • Why do you not accept stretched and dried furs?
We are not a tannery and therefore we do not want the liabilty associated with anything that could go wrong during the tanning process. We'd rather have you pick the tannery of your choice and rest assured that your fur is being well taken care of.
  • Who do you recommend I send my furs to get tanned?

  • Do you repair fur garments that other people made?
No, sorry. We only do repairs or alterations on our own garments.
  • How do I care for my new hat or mittens?
Fur garments require special care. Once you've bought your fur you'll want to protect your investment. That means taking care of your fur properly. Here are some simple rules to help you get the most out of your fur. 1. Never store fur in a plastic bag. 2. Never leave fur near a direct heat source. 3. If fur gets wet, shake it out and hang it up to dry away from heat in a place where air circulates. 4. Never comb or brush wet fur. 5. Never moth proof fur with chemical sprays. 6. Store your fur during the warm season in a dark, dry and temperature controlled area. A cardboard box up on a shelf is ideal. 7. If furs are heavily soiled have them cleaned by a fur speciaist. NOT a dry cleaner. 8. Avoid hanging furs in a bright place. Bright light can oxidize fur and change its color. 9. If you must clean your fur, lightly wipe off any dirt with a damp cloth and hang to dry. Never get your fur completly wet. The fur itself will dry but the leather will dry and will no longer be soft and supple.
  • Are your hats adjustable for size?
No, you will need to make sure you order the correct size hat. Our hats are designed to fit comfortably within a small variance + / - your size. Fur hats are difficult to make adjustable without cumbersome fasteners and we prefer to keep the look of our hats clean.
  • My head size falls right between two sizes. What should I do?
If your head size is approaching the max listed for a specic size it is best to order the next size up. For example, our XL hat is designed to comfortably fit a head size of 23-24". This means if your head circumference is 24" the hat will fit but is likely to be tight. You would be best to order the next size up. However, if your head size is on the smaller end, say 23 1/4" you will still want to order the XL.
  • How do I know what size mitten to order?
Mitten size is the same as glove size. If you normally wear a large glove, order a large mitten. Our mittens should fit loose, not tight!
  • What fur makes the best hat?
The one you like the most! Seriously, if your going to wear a fur garment pick the type of fur you want to wear and don't worry whether it is the warmest or will stand up to the most abuse. All fur is going to be warm! That being said, River Otter is the most durable and likely to stand up to the most abuse.
  • Can I mix and match furs for my hats or mittens?
Yes, of course and I highly encourage it. Some of my most popular hat styles utilize two or more types of fur. For example, River otter and coyote go great together. Take a look at the hats we offer for sale to get more ideas for your own custom project.
  • Do you offer a warranty on your worksmenship?
Yes! If you notice a defect in the worksmenship of any of our products return them and we will fix the problem or try to make it right with you. Normal wear and tear or misuse and abuse are not covered under our warranty.
